Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis offers advantages to most patients requiring ankle fusion. In some patients with bleeding disorders, vascular impairment, or skin grafts, it is the only technique that should be used. In most cases, it offers advantages in rate and speed of union by allowing early weight bearing and by allowing the remaining foot joints to maintain their mobility. A few cases with severe fixed deformity may not be suitable for arthroscopic fusion. It is a difficult technique and is not suitable for the occasional or untrained operator.
