Colloidal particles of boehmite, formed by precipitation from AlCl3 solutions, have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Strong effects of the pH of precipitation of aluminium hydroxide and the mode of its drying on the phase composition of the precipitate were observed. The experimental conditions for the preparation of boehmite films, without use of Al-organic precursor or organic peptizing agents, were determined. It was found that the crystallite size in the boehmite films was of the order of 2 to 3 nm.
