In several occasions during the last years the Catholic Church has made public its refusal to accept women into priesthood on the basis of (among others) historical arguments taken from the Ancient History of Christianity. The aim of this article is to discuss the legitimacy of the use of such historical arguments, some of which are far from being accurate, and to explore the origin of women's exclusion from the hierarchical and liturgical functions, a process which started at a very early stage in the history of Christianity, being fully formulated in the ivth and vth centuries.
