EXPERIMENTAL-DETERMINATION OF ENERGY OF EXPLOSION WITH THE HELP OF UNDERWATER SHOCK-WAVE AND BUBBLE PRESSURE PULSES

Using piezoelectric transducers and high speed instruments, dynamic high pressures of shock wave and bubble pressure pulses have been recorded in the water medium. The associated high pressure shock wave phenomenon is of transient in nature lasting for a very short duration. From the pressure-time signatures of shock wave and bubble pulses, energy utilised in each pressure pulse has been evaluated in the case of standard TNT explosive and typical aluminised explosive Torpex-4A. Based upon these high pressure shock wave measurements, underwater explosive performance of these two explosives has been investigated. Energy of explosion has been determined by applying shock energy loss factor. Experimentally evaluated value of explosion energy has been found to be in fairly good agreement with the thermochemically calculated energy value obtained theoretically.
