The microstructure-property relations were determined for specimens of the Al2O3ZrO2 eutectic composition as a function of Y2O3 stabilizer content. Specimens were produced from rapidly solidified powders via hot pressing. In unstabilized specimens, the microstructure consisted of dispersed and interconnected regions of monoclinic ZrO2 in an α-Al2O3 matrix. Similar microstructural features were observed in stabilized specimens; however, tetragonal ZrO2 was present rather than monoclinic ZrO2. In unstabilized specimens, fractographic analysis indicated that microcracking was the primary toughening mechanism. Fractographic analysis clearly revealed remnants of a deformation process in the crack wake of the stabilized specimens. Because transformation toughening was not observed in the stabilized specimens, the operative deformation process offers the potential of a novel toughening mechanism for brittle materials. © 1990.
