The most used standard states for activity coefficients are reexamined and compared under a general framework. The pecularities of the definition of a standard state based on a reference state at saturation, for partially miscible solutes, are discussed. The expressions for the calculation of property changes of mixing in terms of the saturated reference state for the solute and the pure compound reference state for the solvent are discussed in detail. © 1990.
