The emphasis on improved pain control and the focus on treating chronic pain syndromes have led to a large increase in the number of patients on chronic opioid medications. The use of opioids chronically is associated with a variety of breathing disorders and potential for fatal outcomes. Understanding the mechanisms underlying control of respiration and opioid-mediated respiratory depression is essential in applying treatment options and providing new directions for management without sacrificing adequate pain control.
