In small ranges of concentration ascorbic acid yields oscillations in the Belousov-Zhabotinskiitype reaction [substrate/bromate/cerium (sulfuric acid)]. During the reaction ascorbic acid is oxidized and decomposed. The oxidation respectively bromination of the resulting compounds, as oxalic acid, threonic acid, glyceric acid and pyruvic acid, also leads to oscillatory chemical reactions in the same range of concentration as ascorbic acid.
