Assessment of a Case with Capsular Block Syndrome by Ultrasound Biomicroscopy

The role and importance of ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM) in the diagnosis of capsular block syndrome (CBS) is highlighted in this case report. A 66-year-old woman with a history of cataract surgery applied to our clinic with symptoms of decreased vision and pain in her right eye. On ophthalmologic examination, the distance between the intraocular lens (IOL) and posterior capsule was very wide. Elevated intraocular pressure and presence of cells in the anterior chamber were also detected. UBM examination showed excessive capsular bag distension. For this reason, Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was performed. Decrease in capsular bag distention and increase in iris-IOL distance were observed on control UBM imaging. UBM imaging is a useful technique in the diagnosis and follow up of CBS.
