USE OF SOL-GEL TECHNIQUES FOR FIBEROPTIC SENSOR APPLICATIONS

摘要
Porous glass is often used in fibre-optic chemical sensing (FOCS) but has some disadvantages in its use. The novel concept of applying sol-gel technology to FOCS is introduced and initial investigations are described. The fluorophore FITC has been immobilized in both a gel coating and a gel monolith and its characteristic optical spectrum has been observed in both cases. A pH-sensitive response is obtained from the monolith in the range pH 5 to pH 9 and is also described. Some of the limitations observed are also reported, with suggestions for possible solutions.
