While the US is an acknowledged leader in lightwave technologies and applications, worldwide developments, particularly in Japan and Europe, are highly comparable. This article provides a summary of major international developments over the past two years, and is based upon interviews conducted with people working in the field along with an extensive literature review based on database searches.
