HIGH-VELOCITY GAS DRIZZLE INTO THE DISK OF NGC-4258

摘要
Spectra in three position angles in NGC 4258 reveal a complex pattern of ionized gas velocities. Along the major axis the spectrum has a feathery appearance, with multiple velocity structures at many radii. At 25° to the major axis, on the approaching far side, gas velocities span the range from the disk rotation velocity to 300 km s-1 more positive. It is likely that we are observing high-velocity gas drizzling to the plane. On the near side we observe (r = 73″, θ = 305°) a galactic chimney, with gas velocities ranging from + 250 km s-1 to -250 km s-1 with respect to the disk velocity. Our spectral coverage is incomplete and cannot constrain a model, but we relate the observed features to the known jets and anomalous arms in NGC 4258.
