Pin fixation of distal radius fractures - Indication, technique, results

Background: Approximately 14% of fractures involve the distal radius. Correspondingly high is the percentage of unstable fracture types, which require operative stabilization. A technically simple and quick to carry out method is percutaneous pinning with k-wires. Methods: 2 different methods of percutaneous pinning of Colles fractures were evaluated in 2 separate follow-up studies. Results: In 32 follow-ups of patients treated with Kirschner-wires and in 23 patients treated with basket wires it was shown that good to very good results could be achieved and that the loss of reduction radially and dorsally could be kept to a minimum if not completely prevented. Conclusions: Due to the fact that radial length is better maintained with basket - and palmar concavity with Kirschner-wires a combination of the two methods is recommended.
