Simulation and measurement of an active tunable multi-band metamaterial in the terahertz band

Based on rich resonance performances and active modulation characteristics, devices based on tunable metamaterials are widely used in communication, sensing, and other fields. In this paper, a tunable metamaterial containing a strontium titanate (STO) layer is measured and verified in 2–38THz. At room temperature (20 ℃), two obvious transmission peaks (P1 and P2) are excited. In experiments, ambient temperature is increased from 20 to 100 ℃, P1 and P2 peaks are strengthened and combined into a clear transmission band (average transmittance is 87.9%). Simultaneously, new transmission peaks are revealed (P3 and P4). Moreover, the resonance properties (resonance frequency and amplitude) of the P3 and P4 peaks are obvious temperature tunable. Therefore, this tunable metamaterial sample shows good environmental adaptability and has the potential to be applied to optoelectronic devices.
