A new theory of effective stresses in soils is proposed. The theory differs from the well-known K. Terzaghi theory in that the soil is considered as a structured system, which experiences the effects of external and internal stresses of gravitational and physicochemical nature. The stresses calculated with external and internal forces taken into account characterize the actual effective stresses existing in a porous structured body. Both groups of stresses are considered, and formulas are given for calculating overall actual effective stresses in soils.
