Mental Health Trauma Treatment within the Current Mediterranean Refugee Crisis

Within Europe, the current refugee resettlement and rehabilitation efforts have been reviewed ongoingly by media and resource providers, but this seems to have been done with a focus more on regulations and procedures, rather than on refugee well-being. This present review of current services and policies aims to consolidate current research and practices in regard to refugee well-being to provide direction for future policy and actions. The article centers around the intersection of three topics: refugees, trauma, and mental health treatment. Background research regarding effective trauma treatment in multicultural populations is paired with current treatments available to refugees. This paper focuses on an overview of treatment efforts provided in the two border countries of Italy and Greece during the recent influx of asylum seekers and refugees from the current Mediterranean migration route. The focus particularly examines trauma issues and multiculturally effective trauma treatment models. Based on these topics, suggestions are provided for future research and possible policy implementation for more effective treatment.
