Abstract: A fundamental problem of the theory of wind wave generation is considered: the scatter of the critical windspeed at which stable wind waves develop with growing steepness along the fetch. It is shown experimentally that one reason for the scatter of the critical windspeed is a film of impurities at low concentrations on the surface of the water. © 2022, Allerton Press, Inc.
