Methylene blue as a means of treatment for priapism caused by intracavernous injection to combat erectile dysfunction

Objective: The authors observed priapism as aside effect occuring during the intracavernoustreatment of erectile dysfunction. Earlierpriapism had been treated with anintracavernous injection of sympatomimetics;unfortunately several complications andcontraindications were found.Patients and methods: Methylene blue wasapplied in the treatment of five patients.First a corpus cavernosum punction wasperformed and some blood was aspirated from thepenis. Finally 100 mg of Methylthionin Chloratiwas injected into the corpus cavernosum.Results: A sufficient detumescence wasobserved in all of these cases. There were nocomplications. The method was appliedeffectively in two cases after an unsuccessfulpunction.Conclusion: The autors recommendintravenous methylene blue for the treatment ofpriapism. According to their experience thismethod is free of complications and aseffective as a sympathomimetics treatment. Asthey think, it can be recommended in anymanifestations of priapism because its force ofaction appears to be both chemically andbiologically clear.
