Method for Determining the Modulus of Elasticity for Gas Thermal Spray Coatings

We have studied the effect of coating thickness on the modulus of elasticity of the coatings. We have developed a technique for determining the modulus of elasticity for a coating under tension. The elasticity modulus of the coatings was determined in tests on standard metallic tensile specimens with a coating. We observed that as the coating thickness increases, its modulus of elasticity is reduced. We have shown that the relationship between the modulus of elasticity and the thickness of plasma spray coatings is described well by an exponential equation.
