Regularities of reactions of Groups IV, V transition metal carbides with nickel

Regularities of reactions of Groups IV, V transition metal carbides with nickel are generalized. It is established that the interaction of near-stoichiometry carbides MeIV, VC with Ni is characterized by the preferential dissolution of carbon, while that of strongly defect carbides with Ni is characterized by the dissolution of metal. The composition of the carbide phase correspondingly varies. The variation rate of the carbide composition during the dissolution increases in series MeIVC → MeVC, as well as with an increase in Me/X ratio in its homogeneity region. It is shown that the chemical activity of carbides MeIV, VC in mixtures with nickel is a function of the thermodynamic activity of components entering their composition. It is confirmed experimentally that systems MeIV, VCx(x → 1)–Ni are not quasi-binary. It is established that the dissolution of nickel in the lattice of carbides MeVC leads to the suppression of the disorder–order phase transition and stabilization of the NaCl-type structure.
