Combustion synthesis of complex carbohydrides in the Ti-Nb-W-C-H system

Combustion of Ti-Nb-W-C blends in hydrogen and argon was explored. The synthesis of Ti-Nb-W-C complex carbohydrides from xTi + (1 - x)(Nb + W) + yC mixtures (0.6 ≤ x ≤ 0.8; 0.4 ≤ y ≤ 0.8) was performed in a one-stage process. For combustion in argon, (a) no mutual dissolution of niobium and titanium carbides was observed and (b) a small amount of W was not involved in combustion and carbide formation. For combustion in hydrogen, a predominant product phase was the Ti- and Nb-based complex (bimetallic) carbohydride with fcc structure. In some cases (depending on metals ratio) a small admixture of the Nb 2C phase was detected. The combustion in hydrogen accompanied by mutual dissolution of carbides formed in the combustion wave was found to yield new hydrogen-containing and easily dispersible carbides with a low amount of free W. © 2012 Allerton Press, Inc.
