Improvement in photoluminescence properties of (Y,Gd)(V1−xPx)O4:Eu3+ phosphors by doping Al3+

(Y0.5Gd0.5)0.94−y(V1−xPx)AlyO4:0.06Eu3+ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.02) phosphors are synthesized by the solution combustion process. In this study, structural and photoluminescence properties of the (Y0.5Gd0.5)0.94−y(V1−xPx)AlyO4:0.06Eu3+ phosphors are reported. The emission characteristics of the (Y0.5Gd0.5)0.94VO4:0.06Eu3+ phosphor under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation are greatly improved with the incorporation of Al3+ ions and partial substitution of P5+ for V5+. The red emission intensity of the (Y0.5Gd0.5)0.925(V0.25P0.75)Al0.015O4:0.06Eu3+ phosphor is 151% stronger than that of the (Y0.5Gd0.5)0.94(V0.25P0.75)O4:0.06Eu3+ phosphor.
