Modulation instability of wave packets in inhomogeneous optical waveguides

Conditions for the modulation instability of a wave packet in an optical waveguide with the exponential profile of the group velocity dispersion along the waveguide’s length is investigated. With allowance for the Kerr nonlinearity and the nonlinearity dispersion, analytical expressions for the integral increment of amplification of a harmonic perturbation and for other important characteristics determining the dynamics of the modulation instability in the waveguide with the specified inhomogeneity type are obtained.
