Prospects for the construction of tidal power plants in Russia

The potential for commercially utilizing tidal power for power generation in Russia is discussed. The floating method of construction increases the construction time and reduces costs. Orthogonal generating sets have been designed to solve the problem of using a large number of generating sets for low heads and unlimited flow rates. Impermeable and frost-resisting concretes have been developed for the tidal power plants. The experience gained during three decades of operation at the Kisloguba tidal electric plant in Russia and at Rance in France is discussed. Feasibility studies are being conducted for seven large tidal plants in different parts of the world.
