Specific Physicochemical Properties of Succinic Acid

Solid succinic acid tends to undergo fast polymorphous transitions. This phenomenon, and also realization of numerous bifurcation points make its autoionization processes very diverse. The polymorphism of the acid is reflected in its optical spectra. The concentration of solvated “free”] charges in the crystals is significant. The electrical conductivity of the acid is electronic. Application of a weak alternate electric field initiates reversible chemical reactions in the acid. The molar volume of the acid in solutions is 73 cm3, and the mean dipole moment in dioxane, 2.6 D; the energy of the intramolecular hydrogen bond is close to 3.5 kcal mol-1. The thermal dissociation of the crystal lattices of the acid is significant at temperatures exceeding 100-120°C.
