Particle-Size Effect on the Rate of Carbon Reduction of TiO2

Data are presented on the rate of TiO2 reduction in the TiO2–C system at 1300°C at different specific surfaces of the starting reagents. The equivalent particle sizes of TiO2 and C, varied in the range 100–500 nm, have similar effects on the rate of TiO2 reduction. Analysis of the reaction kinetics indicates that the carbonizing of TiO2 is a diffusion-limited process if the specific surface areas of TiO2 and C exceed 100 m2/g.
