Abstract: The method used in failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to assess the severity of the effects of failure is considered, noting its weaknesses and limitations. An approach is proposed for taking account of the type of consumer in assessing the severity of the effects. Another approach may be used to take account of the total number of effects on the final estimate of the severity. The proposed approaches are illustrated with an example. © 2023, Allerton Press, Inc.
