Microhardness study of the nonlinear optical crystal L-arginine hydrochloride monohydrate

The results of measurement of the Vickers microhardness (Hv) of the (100), (010), and (001) faces of the nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal L-arginine hydrochloride monohydrate (LAHCl) have been reported. It was observed that the microhardnesses of the three crystal planes decrease with the increase of applied load, and the hardness profile is different for different planes. The proportional specimen-resistance (PSR) model of Li and Bradt is used to explain the microhardness behavior of LAHCl. The indentation work-hardening coefficients (n) for three planes were found to be greater than 1.8, and this indicates that LAHCl is a soft crystal.
