We found a group of available and efficient catalysts for the addition reaction of CO2 to epoxides, which was formed by simple mixing of molecular iodine with α-amino acids. Analysis of the spectral characteristics of the proline—iodine mixture, which showed the highest activity, suggests its existence as an equilibrium structure such as [proline—I]+I−.
