A method of enhancement of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering of light (SERS) using a one-dimensional photonic crystal as a support is proposed. Light strikes the photonic crystal at the angle ensuring total reflection from the far border of the photonic crystal. The surface wave is excited on this border, leading to the enhancement of the local field intensity and the SERS enhancement. It is shown using numerical calculations that the suggested method may increase the sensitivity of the common SERS techniques by three orders of magnitude. © 2015, Allerton Press, Inc.
