Use of a Chlorophyll Meter To Determine the Nitrogen Status of Winter Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The values recorded for the SPAD index in winter barley leaves at tillering and in the flag leaf at the beginning of flowering are in close correlation with the actual N concentration in these plant organs, making them suitable for the estimation of N nutrition levels. Under the given experimental conditions satisfactory levels of N nutrition were indicated by a leaf N % of 4.0–5.0 and a SPAD index of 40–47 at tillering, and by a flag leaf N % of 4.8–5.3 and a SPAD index of 48–53 at the beginning of flowering.
