摘要
The prevalence of dementia will most likely increase as the population ages. Urinary incontinence (UI) is common among the elderly and has been associated with dementia, particularly when impaired mobility is also present. UI is also associated with poor quality of life, increased risk of institutionalization, and increased morbidity. Causes of UI in those with cognitive impairment can be broadly categorized as potentially reversible or established. Although complete continence is not always possible, a multifactorial approach to diagnosis and treatment that involves developing goals of care with the patient and family or caregiver can often lead to improvement in symptoms and a reduction in the frequency of UI in this vulnerable population. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
