The development of hand surgery in the three German-speaking countries is reported with special reference to the contributions in the literature. The formation of national and supra-national societies and the first meetings are part of the description of the modern hand surgery, written from the standpoint of the author. In this review article, the collection of the most important bibliographic data is of particular value.
