An experimental study of Fresnel diffraction by deterministic fractal gratings was presented. It was shown that the evolution of the diffraction patterns in the Fresnel region reveals the hierarchical structure deterministic fractal gratings. It was also shown that it is not always possible to reveal the fractal properties of optical fields on the basis of only measurements of the intensity distribution.
