The results of location monitoring of ice formations on operating 35 – 330 kV overhead power lines are described, which were obtained using multifunctional multi-channel location systems that have been operating in an autonomous automatic mode at six Russian substations for 13 years. The specifics of the location monitoring technologies used to detect ice formations are discussed. The procedure for controlled melting of ice deposits is described along with its efficiency assessment using location sounding and wire weighing methods. Other technological possibilities of location monitoring of overhead power lines are discussed, such as panoramic visual control of the performance of all outgoing lines in the stack memory mode, while recording the preventive maintenance and repair work durations. The methods allowing to perform the following operations are discussed: determining the location of the power line wire damage as a result of short circuit or breakage; determining the configuration of the power transmission lines, while identifying branching andinhomogenuities; controlling wire temperature and sagging, optimizing the operation of the reclosing device; and panoramic monitoring of the frequency load of high-frequency section of the power transmission lines. © 2023, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
