A chirp Z-transform (CZT)-based dynamic phasor estimation technique is proposed for enhancing the measurands of the phasor measurement unit (PMU) in the modern electric grids. Moreover, the developed CZT-based phasor estimation process is employed to characterize the various dynamic characteristic of power system voltage/current signals based on the contour of its total vector error. Further, the efficacy of the proposed CZT-based estimation algorithm has been validated in reference to Standard IEEE C37.118.1a-2014. Furthermore, the developed dynamic phasor estimation technique based on CZT is applied to evaluate the parameters (voltage/current) of modified two-area Kundur’s power system. The simulation results in reference to C37.118 standard test signals and two area power systems reveal that CZT-based dynamic phasor estimation algorithm is robust to the various transients/dynamics/disturbances in the complex modern power system. Thus, the proposed CZT-based dynamic phasor estimation technique can be best suitable for a wide range of applications based on PMU data to explore the characteristics of modern electric grids.
