摘要
Purpose: Physical education (PE) contributes to improve physical conditions and to promote health. However, its importance is often underestimated and recommended levels of physical activity (PA) are not always achieved during PE lessons. The aim of the study was to evaluate the current situation of PE teaching in the Italian school through undergraduates’ experiences and opinions and to investigate the determinants of PA in adulthood. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 1,049 freshmen. Demographic data and information about actual PA were also collected. Logistic regression models were applied to verify which variables might influence current practice of PA and personal opinion about PE teaching. Results: The 64.3 % of the sample reported current practice of PA. PE was considered significant by 73.3 % of the undergraduates, but 33.5 % was dissatisfied with secondary school PE teaching. Previous participation to sport training-based extracurricular activities was positively correlated with current PA/sport practice (OR 1.46; CI 95 % 1.10–1.94), good opinions about PE teaching (OR 2.51; CI 95 % 1.83–3.44) and satisfaction for PE personal experience (OR 2.04; CI 95 % 1.47–2.81). Conclusions: PE could play a fundamental role in public health policies and it should be enhanced in the Italian school. After-school activities seem to be a key element to strengthen the effects of PE in promoting a healthy lifestyle. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Italia.
