Carbon-doped MoS2 nanosheet photocatalysts for efficient degradation of methyl orange

A facile doping method for two dimensional (2D) materials utilizing inexpensive raw materials was proposed to achieve excellent photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). In this work, MoS2 nanosheets were synthesized and carbon-doped using carbon-assistant heating with degreasing cotton. The prepared samples were characterized and investigated as photocatalysts for degradation of MO under visible light. The obtained results showed that the modified MoS2 nanosheets with the lateral width of ~600 nm were filled with defects and Mo-C bond was found in the nanosheets. The carbon-doped MoS2 nanosheets with rich defects were demonstrated to have an excellent photocatalytic property with optimum dosage of 0.3 g/L photocatalyst in 40 mg/L MO solution. It displayed high degradation efficiency and very good repeatability in comparison with other reported works of MoS2 nanosheets and other nanocomposites.
