Effects of Forbush decreases of galactic cosmic rays on anticyclone activity at middle latitudes

The baric response of the lower atmosphere to Forbush decreases of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) is investigated. It is shown that Forbush decreases are accompanied by a weakening of cyclonic activity and a strengthening of anticyclonic activity at the extratropical latitudes (45°–70°) of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. These results show an important role of cosmic rays in solar-terrestrial relationships. © 2015, Allerton Press, Inc.
