Sudden death in a foal due to Tyzzer's disease: A case report

A 1-month-old foal that appeared normal in the previous evening was found dead. She was born to a multiparous 11-years-old mare, kept in a riding club in Kermanshah, Iran. At necropsy, enterocolitis, hepatomegaly and hemorrhages on serosal and mucosal surfaces of intestines were noted. Microscopic lesions including multifocal hepatocellular necrosis, infiltration of inflammatory cells in portal triads with biliary hyperplasia, and degeneration of hepatocytes were observed. Diagnosis of Tyzzer's disease was based upon demonstration of typical Clostridium piliforme organisms within hepatocytes surrounding necrotic areas using Giemsa staining method. The authors believe that the following report is the first description of Tyzzer's disease in horse in Iran. © 2012 Springer-Verlag London.
