The influence of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the expression of genes that encode biomarkers of inflammation and apoptosis

The potential toxic effects of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were assessed by analyzing their influence on the expression of genes that encode biomarkers of inflammatory reactions and apoptosis in human lymphocytes. It was shown that nanoparticles of silver and titanium dioxide at concentrations of 10–40 µg/mL upregulated the transcriptional expression of the genes that encode IL-6, IL-8, TNFa, and p53. An increase in the expression of IL-6, IL-8, and TNFα is a marker of immune-response activation, while upregulation of p53 expression suggests stimulation of apoptosis. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
