Highly anisotropic dielectric behavior of Bi2Sr2Dy(Cu1−xZnx)2O8

We have performed low-frequency dielectric measurements on Bi2Sr2DyCu2O8 (Dy-Bi2212) single crystals in order to investigate the charge carrier dynamics near the insulator-to-metal transition. The in-plane dielectric constant (the real part of complex permittivity) ɛ′ab exhibits large values of more than 104, probably due to the spatial distribution of the charges trapped within the CuO2 planes. Along the c axis, we found an anomalous enhancement in ɛc′ at ∼250 K. Zn impurity does not affect the ɛc′ behavior, suggesting that the out-of-plane polarizability is not related to the antiferromagnetic ordering of Cu spins.
