Some necessary and sufficient conditions are given in order to obtain biorthogonal wavelet filters with properties which are usually required in applications, such as symmetry and regularity order, by appropriately choosing the parameters in the lifting scheme. A special class of filters extending the biorthogonal B-spline filters is then proposed and analyzed.
