The Effects of Deprivation and Satiation on Decision-Making Related to Risky Sex

The present study examined the degree to which sexual states and partner desirability impact college students’ willingness to engage in risky sex. Participants (N = 251) were presented with scenarios depicting deprived or satiated sexual states and high or low partner desirability, and asked to indicate whether they would engage in certain risky sexual behaviors under those circumstances. Males exhibited greater willingness to engage in risky sex with a high-desirability partner when deprived, but not so when satiated or with a low-desirability partner. This effect was not observed in females. This investigation suggests that contextual factors may be useful to understand risky sexual choices amongst males.
