Five primary hepatotropic viruses have been identified to date: hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D (HDV) and hepatitis E (HEV). Other non-A-E hepatitis viruses, e.g. GBV-C, HGV, TTV and SENV have not yet been shown to cause hepatitis in humans and are therefore clinically irrelevant. This review summarizes our current knowledge on the diagnosis, prevention and therapy of hepatitis A-E. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2006.
