Is there a role for glycated albumin in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus?

Previously studies in general population reported that glycated albumin (GA) presents similar accuracy as HbA1c for detecting diabetes.The present study showed that in pregnant women the area under the curve (AUC) for GA in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was much lower than AUC for HbA1c.Unlike HbA1c, GA does not have the ability to correctly discriminate those with and without GDM.Our findings may provide a cautious approach when assessing glycaemic status using GA in pregnant women, since pregnancy can be considered a confounding factor.
