Between 1994 and 2003, 63 cases of suicide in childhood and adolescence were investigated in the Institute of Legal Medicine/University of Hamburg. Of the victims 9 were less than 14 years old, 21 between 15 and 17 and 33 between 18 and less than 21 years old and were predominantly male (77.8%). The most frequent method of suicide was hanging (31%), followed by jumping from a height (24%) and being run over by trains (21%). Epidemiologic aspects concerning age, sex, methods of and reasons for suicide, psychoactive drugs and general circumstances are presented. Possible preventive measures are discussed. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2005.
