摘要
Echocardiography is the standard non-invasive imaging modality to investigate the cardiovascular system of the fetus, child and adolescent. The purpose of these quality standards is to provide a consistently high level of diagnostic skills for the echocardiographic investigation of patients with congenital heart disease. In this article the requirements for the examiner are defined regarding the echocardiographic modality used, hardware, the course of image acquisition as well as documentation and reporting. We comment on the methods of investigation and analysis based on the most important published literature. In addition to transthoracic echocar-diography, the more complex fetal and trans-esophageal techniques are discussed. Finally, a special overview on tissue Doppler, two-dimensional (2-D) deformation analysis as well as 3-D echocardiography is given including advantages, disadvantages and recommendations about the clinical value based on the current literature.
