Reliability of the tests’ results of Schmidt Hammer and core cutting for assessing actual compressive strength of concrete

The study aims to investigate the reliability of the assessment results of compressive strength of different concrete testing by using Schmidt Hammer and core cutting in assessing the concrete’s actual compressive strength so that a correlation between them is obtained versus the standard cylinder and cube specimens’ compressive strength. Normal concrete slabs of size (1000 × 1000 × 200 mm) without reinforcing rebars, a standards cylinder (height: 200 mm, diameter: 100 mm), and 100 mm standard cube specimens at 7, 14, and 28 curing days were used in the experimental study. The core cutting specimens with aspect ratios (L/d = 2) were extracted vertically through the thickness of slabs, and before the extraction of the cores, the slabs were tested using Schmidt Hammer. The best-fit conversion factors of the results of Schmidt Hammer and core cutting to the standard cylinder and cube specimens were obtained via processing correlation between data sets, which can be effortlessly applied to the in-situ compressive strength of concrete. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
