Complex biofilms of varying compositions colonize the surfaces of the oral cavity. Many of these biofilms are associated with chronic diseases of which several are explored in this article. The importance of understanding these biofilms by using in vitro models in the laboratory is also highlighted. © 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Printed in the Netherlands.
